What's the difference between a Role Playing Party, Murder Mystery Party, and Themed Party?

A Role Playing Party typically involves a more complex story line where decisions made by the players will dynamically affect the way the story ends; you will likely experience different outcomes each time you play the same story. A Murder Mystery Party revolves around a mysterious death of one of the characters and is about uncovering the killer and their motive. A Theme Party features a more lighthearted story that primarily serves as background for a social gathering. For the best experience, it is highly encouraged to dress up and get into character with costumes and decorations when enjoying each of these types of games, but it’s absolutely possible to play each of them and have fun without the costumes or theme elements.

What's the difference between Story Games and Casual Games?

Story Games involve a plot and various levels of role-playing, with each guest being assigned a specific character to play for the duration of the game. Story Games are designed to be an immersive experience and are most enjoyable when accompanied by costumes, decorations, and food and drinks that elevate the theme. Casual Games are meant to be enjoyed more spontaneously, like a board game or a card game, and do not involve any role-playing elements. These are typically shorter games you can play with friends on the couch or during any casual hangout, without getting into character or wearing a costume.

Do my guests need to purchase the game too?

No, only the host is required to purchase the game—there is no cost or additional purchase necessary for guests.

On which devices/TVs I can run the StoryPop Companion App?

You can run the Companion App on any iPad or Android tablet using the main StoryPop app. Simply download the Storypop app onto your tablet, sign in, and then navigate to Profile > Companion Mode. Once in companion mode, you can cast your tablet to your Smart TV. Alternatively, you can launch the Companion App directly from the web browser on your laptop or Smart TV. We strive to support as many devices as possible, but some devices might not display the web version correctly. If this happens, please try a different device.

How do I open a web browser on my TV?

Most modern TVs will have an app allowing users to access Web. Simply search the apps available on your Smart TV for an app called "Browser" or "Internet." Once you have located and opened a web browsing app, enter the following URL to access the StoryPop Companion App: spop.app/tv

How do I invite guests to a game that was started with the "Play now" button?

The “Play now” option is designed for people who want to start a game spontaneously, assuming that all the guests/players are already gathered. To have guests join the game room, simply share the link that is generated in the StoryPop app after clicking the "Play now" button, or have guests scan the QR code that is displayed on the Companion App.

How do I start a game?

The Start game button will show up on your Games page as soon as you have the minimum number of characters assigned to your guests, and all the guests are checked-in. Don’t forget: with StoryPop, the host can still enjoy the game!

How do I open check-in before a game?

In the StoryPop app, you can tap "Open check-in" from your Games page as early as one hour before the planned game start time. If you need to modify the game start time, tap on that game tile under your Games tab to edit game settings. Make sure your game night has a date set, and remember you can still add guests while check-in is open. The host will be able to start the game once all required characters (or, for Casual Games, the minimum number of players) have checked in.
